Therapy for Moms & Moms-to-Be with Traumatic Pasts

Are you ready to find joy in motherhood, but your traumatic past is getting in the way?

Are you a mama or mom-to-be who really wants to show up and be present for your child in a warm and nurturing way, but you’re not sure how to do so? Maybe you grew up in a chaotic, unhealthy home, and now you feel like your own childhood trauma is interfering with the type of parent that you want to be for your babies. You want to be that secure base for your children, but you never had one, so now you’re dealing with overwhelming, intrusive thoughts from your own childhood as you try to parent.

Or maybe you experienced sexual trauma in the past, and now the idea of trying to conceive and/or go through childbirth is stirring up painful memories. Do you want to be able to go through pregnancy and childbirth without consuming anxiety anytime you have to visit the OBGYN to get checked?

If your traumatic past is getting in the way of your developing a healthy attachment with your babies, you are not alone. Parenting can stir up memories of past childhood traumas, and can be very distressing for parents to deal with.

It is possible to work through and find lasting relief from past traumatic experiences from your own childhood, build a healthier relationship with your own children than you had with your parents, and find joy in motherhood.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY FOR MOMS & MOMS-TO-BE WITH TRAUMATIC PASTS

Parenting can be stressful when you didn’t have the best role models growing up. Parenting can trigger intrusive thoughts about past abuse or neglect that you endured as a child. Trauma therapy can help you work through your past to finally find relief. My primary goal during our work together is to provide a warm, nonjudgmental space for you to be able to process and resolve past distressing memories, and gain the tools to be the kind of parent to your babies that you want to be.

In the beginning stages of therapy, we will build up our therapeutic relationship so that you feel safe, and we will collaboratively figure out the best approach for your needs. This may be through traditional talk therapy, EMDR therapy, or a combination of both. Together, we will explore how your child trauma is impacting your current symptoms, and we will start by building up your ability to cope with your current symptoms more effectively.

Then, we will process past traumatic memories, and identify and work on shifting any negative beliefs (“It’s my fault,” “I’m not good enough,” etc.) that are keeping you stuck. EMDR therapy tends to be most effective in working through these traumatic events efficiently and effectively.

If you never had a positive parenting role model as a child, we can also work on establishing healthy, authoritative parenting skills that will help guide your child and also foster a secure attachment with them.

Therapy for moms & moms-to-be with traumatic pasts can help you:

  • Finally find peace and relief

  • Reduce self-blame

  • Build confidence in your ability to parent both lovingly and authoritatively

  • Reduce anxiety about having children

  • Find joy in motherhood without painful past memories getting in the way

You are not alone.

ALTHOUGH IT MAY FEEL FAR AWAY, WITH HELP AND PROCESSING, YOU CAN FIND RELIEF FROM PAINFUL PAST MEMORIES, AND BE THE CONFIDENT, LOVING MOTHER THAT YOU WANT TO BE.
